If you're going to live close to the city of Los Angeles you're going to find rent expensive. The cheapest type of apartments available out here are bachelor apartments. A bachelor apartment does not have a seperate bedroom, you basically have one room, a bathroom and kitchen.

It's been a while since I lived in the city so I don't know what the going rent is for a bachelors or 1-bedroom. What I can tell you is that if you find a 1-bedroom apt for less than $1,100 a month (in the city) you better double check its location. Around here cheap rent means questionable neighborhood or apartment complex. Outside the city you can expect to pay about $850 to $1,400 a month for a 1-bedroom. Again it all depends on the location....you will not be near $850 a month if you are apartment shopping near the beach, just how it goes around here.

Some places do not charge you utilities (gas, water, electricity, trash service) while other places do charge. It all depends

I would suggest searching the outlying cities for places to live. THey are generally more safe and less expensive. Check places like pasadena, monrovia, temple city, downey, la mirada, buena park, glendale, burbank, north hollywood, long beach --- just to name a few.

you're still going to need a car in this area unless you have a lot of free time and patience to take our public transit system.
